Used Chevy Silverado

For over 20 years, the Chevy Silverado has been one of the most popular vehicles in America. From 2010-2020 over 5.5 million Silverados were sold – that's a rate of one sale per minute over a decade! There are three generations of used Chevy Silverado in that group, and with countless configurations, trims, special editions, and options, few used Silverados are quite alike. With an emphasis on cargo-hauling capability and user-friendly features, Chevy has cemented the Silverado as an iconic American vehicle deserving of attention from truck lovers everywhere.

A huge lineup of engines ranging from 4-cylinders to V8s and Duramax diesels gives every Silverado efficiency, power, towing capacity, or simple budget-friendliness. Newer trucks are generally more capable thanks to engineering advancements, but if you've got serious towing or hauling demands, you'll gain a lot more capacity by looking at a 2500 or 3500 model than by looking at newer 1500 trucks.

Newer trucks offer more than improved capacity, though – they offer improved tech. Chevy has been leading the way for the industry in terms of camera placement and views to eliminate blind spots. Trailering controls improve year after year, and apps make it easier than ever to manage your truck and trailer. Chevy's highly-responsive infotainment systems were introduced in the mid-2010s as well, and advanced active safety tech and driver-assist features have been working their way into Chevy's trucks for years. Of course, these things come with a cost, but it's still true that you can have whatever you want in a used Chevy Silverado.

A Focus on Towing and Tech

There's a lot to love about the Chevy Silverado, especially for those who appreciate having state-of-the-art technology onboard. In the fields of raw capability, embedded features, and modern connectivity, the Chevy Silverado has always pushed the limits of what can be achieved with a high-volume model. The 3rd-generation redesign for 2014 heralded some of these changes – the corner step bumper was introduced, and Hill Descent Control became standard on high trims for easy, brake-pedal-free downhill crawling.

Integrated trailer brake controllers have been onboard Silverado since before the 2010 model year, allowing drivers to control the strength and behavior of trailer brakes. Trailer sway control and hill start assist were made standard in 2012, both important advancements making it easier than ever to stay in control when towing a heavy load. It's also around that time that built-in touch screens, primarily for navigation, started to appear. Safety was improved in 2010 with a bolstered side structure as well – the 2010-2013 second-generation Silverado is probably the best place to look for a truck that's sturdy and comfortable without paying a premium for modern features.

The 2014 Silverado redesign, in addition to the corner step bumper and Hill Descent Control introductions, was highlighted by the inclusion of a Chevy MyLink multimedia touch screen on most trim levels. Bluetooth and inputs for connecting smartphones were standard. Heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models were supplied with optional adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning in 2015 alongside 4G LTE WiFi capability. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility arrived on the scene in 2016 with the 8" touchscreen-equipped models, and you can find automatic high beams on late-cycle third-generation models as well.

You'll find all of the bells and whistles on fourth-generation models from 2019 and later. All of the above features are standard across the board. Some older models, and most examples from 2016 onward, include rearview cameras; however, you'll need a 2019 Silverado or newer for the multi-angle camera systems that eliminate blind spots entirely by providing front, side, rear, and trailer views. This includes the revolutionary "transparent trailer" view that allows drivers to see straight back "through" the trailer as if it wasn't there!

Another modern development is the trailering app. Available through the modern Chevy Infotainment 3 system, the trailering app allows you to manage trailer profiles (including brake controller settings), review checklists, control trailer systems and check diagnostics like tire pressure. While experienced haulers can surely manage without modern apps and cameras, these features make it simple to get into trailering and safer than ever before!

Building on the success of the fourth generation, the latest 2024–2026 Silverado models represent a total digital revolution for the nameplate. Stepping into a used 2024 or newer Silverado means moving from a traditional cabin to a modern command center, highlighted by a massive, best-in-class 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver information center that are now standard on LT trims and above. These newer models introduce Google Built-In compatibility, allowing you to use Google Maps and Assistant directly on the dash without even plugging in your phone. Most impressively, the latest generation has expanded the availability of Super Cruise™, Chevrolet’s hands-free driving technology, which now even functions while trailering on over 400,000 miles of compatible roads. With the addition of the off-road flagship ZR2 and the versatile Multi-Flex Tailgate, the newest Silverados ensure that your Dan Cummins Deal provides the absolute pinnacle of truck utility and semi-autonomous luxury.

Chevy Silverado Engines

With three generations and three weight classes (1500, 2500, and 3500), there are a lot of unique Silverado engines. It's certainly not enough to know the model year of any truck you're interested in – if you want to know what to expect in terms of efficiency and capability, you need to know what's under the hood.

Duramax Diesels

Used heavy-duty Chevy Silverados have always offered diesel engines – it comes with the territory. Huge torque at low rpm makes diesels exceptionally good at towing heavy loads for hundreds of thousands of miles, making them perfect for serious work trucks. The 6.6L Duramax V8 was upgraded in 2011 to make 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. It was upgraded again in 2017, with these models achieving 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque – this allows a properly-equipped fourth-generation Silverado HD to tow over 35,000 lbs. Adding onto the success of this engine, Chevrolet improved power and output of the LP5 engine with the generation 2 version, producing 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. Some specific applications of this generation 2 engine can achieve 550 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

The diesel fun isn't limited to oversized heavy-duty Silverados anymore, either. Starting in 2019, the Silverado 1500 gained the option of equipping a 3.0L Duramax I6 turbodiesel. It matches the 6.2L V8's 460 lb-ft of torque and competes with the big V8s for towing capacity. Unlike the 6.6L, which is a must-have for heavy-duty owners with heavy-duty needs, the 3.0L doesn't totally outpace its gasoline counterparts, but diesel fans will love it nonetheless.

V8

The bulk of all Silverado engine offerings are V8s. Already incorporating fuel-saving features like Active Fuel Management by 2010, many of these rival or beat the V6 engines for fuel economy while dwarfing the V6 power output. Second-generation models sport Vortec 4.3L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L engines that make 295 – 360 hp and 305 – 380 lb-ft of torque in the 2010-2014 model years. With such a wide range of engines, you will be able to find the perfect power plant for your needs.

The 6.0L Vortec was virtually unchanged and remained the base engine for the Silverado HD lineup in the 3rd generation (2014-2019), but all other Vortecs were discontinued. EcoTec3 designs replaced the 5.3L and 6.2L variants on the 2014 Silverado 1500, with the 6.2L making 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque for maximum hauling capability. These engines carried over to fourth-generation Silverado 1500s and continue to deliver excellent all-around performance for the light-duty segment.

I4

The fourth-generation Silverado 1500 is the only full-size truck to offer a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The inexpensive and fuel-efficient 2.7L I4 turbo makes 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque, putting the base V6 to shame and achieving significantly better towing results on 2019-2020 models. Given that it's limited to newer trucks, a shopper trying to balance a budget with high capability and modern tech is well-advised to seek out this engine.

V6

The base engine on most Silverados is a V6. A 4.3L Vortec V6 made 195 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque for 2nd gen 1500s and was replaced by a 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 in 2014. The EcoTec3 makes 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque and is the base engine for the 2014-2021 Silverado 1500. These are the budget engines – more efficient and significantly more capable models are in the lineup, but you won't find them in the most-affordable used Silverados.
