Although the Chevy Trax we know and love was first revealed at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and released in Canada and Mexico as a 2013 model, it hit the road here in the US in the 2015 model year. Since then, there have been some pretty noteworthy changes for the Trax from one year to the next, which is important to keep in mind as you look at different used models. The first-generation Trax released in 2015 received immediate attention thanks to its sleek design, sporty performance, and excellent handling. You can find three trim levels for these early Trax models, starting with the LS, then an LT, and finally an LTZ. Plenty of nice details and features are standard, like a 7.0-inch infotainment display, but if you want more advanced features and extra touches of luxury, like an available seven-speaker Bose sound system, then you should look for a Trax LTZ.
If you are interested in some further updates and revised styling, then you should look for a 2017 Trax—Chevy gave the Trax a facelift and mid-generation update that year. Many of these changes are immediately apparent at a glance, including a new front grille, plus 2017 models feature halogen projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, and more revisions. The interior also received updates with a new design and improvements to the dashboard and instrument panel. The Premier trim is the pinnacle option for this updated Trax, so look for that if you want even more interior improvements and advanced safety technology.

For the 2021 model, Chevy removed the top Premier trim level, leaving the LS and LT options, which make it easy to consider different used models and find what you are looking for. The Nissan Kicks is probably the closest competitor we have seen in terms of impressive style and nimble handling. Still, the Kicks comes up short in some key areas, leaving the Trax as our favorite choice for a pre-owned subcompact model.
