Learn More About the Chevy Trax

Although the Chevy Trax we know and love was first revealed at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and released in Canada and Mexico as a 2013 model, it hit the road here in the US in the 2015 model year. Since then, there have been some pretty noteworthy changes for the Trax from one year to the next, which is important to keep in mind as you look at different used models. With one of our friendly and knowledgeable salespeople working for you, it is much easier to keep track of what each used model has to offer and make sure you get everything you are looking for.

The first-generation Trax released in 2015 received immediate attention thanks to its sleek design, sporty performance, and excellent handling. This is a great option for city driving, where having a smaller model makes dealing with traffic a lot easier, with a 1.4L turbocharged engine that ensures you have a good time behind the wheel. You can find three trim levels for these early Trax models, starting with the LS, then an LT, and finally an LTZ. Plenty of nice details and features are standard, like a 7.0-inch infotainment display, but if you want more advanced features and extra touches of luxury, like an available seven-speaker Bose sound system, then you should look for a Trax LTZ.

If you are interested in some further updates and revised styling, then you should look for a 2017 Trax—Chevy gave the Trax a facelift and mid-generation update that year. Many of these changes are immediately apparent at a glance, including a new front grille, plus 2017 models feature halogen projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, and more revisions. The interior also received updates with a new design and improvements to the dashboard and instrument panel. The Premier trim is the pinnacle option for this updated Trax, so look for that if you want even more interior improvements and advanced safety technology.

As you look at models from the last few years, there are a few important points to keep in mind. For the 2021 model, Chevy removed the top Premier trim level, leaving the LS and LT options, which make it easy to consider different used models and find what you are looking for. The Trax LT from this year is a particularly nice choice, with cruise control, remote start functionality, and heated side mirrors all included. For the 2022 model year, Chevy retuned the 1.4L turbo engine to deliver 155 hp rather than the previous 138 hp, making this a terrific choice if you want a used Trax with boosted performance that is incredibly fun to drive. Finally, note that Chevy skipped the 2023 model year for the Trax to focus on developing an all-new, second-generation Trax that is redesigned for 2024.

How Does the Trax Stack Up Against the Competition?

The subcompact crossover SUV market is a very popular one, so it is fair to say that the Chevy Trax has some stiff competition. Year after year, however, the Trax continues to lead as one of the most stylish and nimble little rides on the road. For example, looking at something like the Kia Soul, you will find a boxy design that looks fine but feels inorganic and lacking when seen side-by-side with the stylish Trax. This is particularly true when you look at Trax models from 2017 and later after the facelift it received, though we tend to prefer the sleek design and bold look of any Trax model.

One of the best things about the Chevy Trax is that it is one of the most budget-friendly options on the market, which is ideal if you have a family or otherwise need to stick to a tight budget. This is true of new Trax vehicles but is doubly true when looking at used options. Compared to something like the Dodge Hornet, which places a premium on high performance at the expense of a reasonable price tag, the Chevy Trax is the perfect choice for keeping costs down. The Nissan Kicks is probably the closest competitor we have seen in terms of impressive style and nimble handling. Still, the Kicks comes up short in some key areas, leaving the Trax as our favorite choice for a pre-owned subcompact model.
