In recent years, one of the most popular and talked about models of the Chevy Silverado 1500 lineup has been the off-road-themed ZR2. This is based on the racing truck that GM uses in motorsports and off-road competitions, featuring high-end suspension and powertrain configurations in an attempt to win races and break records. The ZR2 has gained a lot of attention in recent years across Chevy’s truck lineup, but what is the trim exactly, and is it right for you?

We’ll cover what the ZR2 trim is, where it came from, and what sort of features it offers when purchasing a Chevy Silverado 1500 for sale. If you were interested in the ZR2 but weren’t quite sure what it was or its features, then you’ve come to the right place. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this Silverado 1500 trim ready for off-road adventure.

The Origins of the ZR2

The ZR2 is a performance off-road trim currently available for Chevy’s line-up of pickup trucks, including the Chevy Colorado and the Chevy Silverado, offering modified suspension, utility functionality, and performance to improve the off-road capabilities of the truck, such as the Silverado 1500. Originally offered as a package, this popular enhancement evolved into the off-road-focused model we know today.

So, where did the ZR2 come from, and why is it so popular now? Well, it has a history that dates back to 1994 for the Chevy S-10 series pickup trucks. Just like now, it was also a performance package for the S-10. The ZR2 was eventually phased out in the mid-aughts, shortly after the S-10 was shelved, and the ZR2 went missing in action until 2017, when it made a re-debut as a trim package for the midsize Chevy Colorado. However, the big difference between the older ZR2 and the new ZR2 is that the newer trim is based on the racing variant of the Colorado that’s used in off-road desert races. It comes equipped with lots of racing-themed features attached.

The popularity of the ZR2 trim for the Colorado made it the talk of the town, as it gave the Colorado a much-needed boost in value within the midsize segment and for off-road truck enthusiasts. Given its impressive off-road improvements and many great features for the midsize truck, the ZR2 quickly made waves in the truck community. GM took notice, and for 2022, the ZR2 was then re-introduced for the Chevy Silverado 1500 as its own standalone trim, also based on the desert racing variant of the Silverado 1500, where it was being raced professionally as a prototype in 2019. A number of features were taken from the racing variants and standardized for the production model Silverado 1500 for the 2022 model year.

What Does the ZR2 Offer?

The ZR2 comes with a lot of great features to bolster the appeal of the Silverado 1500. There are a lot of shared elements between the off-road racing variant and the production model ZR2, including many elements of the chassis, drivetrain, and ladder-type frame3. The ZR2 package comes with either the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel that outputs 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, or the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8, which outputs 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Additionally, all ZR2 models come standard with the 2-speed Autotrac transfer case for improved torque distribution among all four wheels and front and rear electronically locking differentials so you can utilize the locking differentials to get extra traction control while traveling across difficult or loose terrain. Additionally, skid plates come standard at the front and underside of the vehicle in order to protect the transfer case.

The ZR2 also comes with a 2-inch factory lift kit, giving you additional ground clearance and leverage for approach and breakover angles. You also get uniquely tuned suspension springs and the high-end race-ready Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, featuring three separate spool valves with three connected chambers for fluid flow to dynamically dampen the compression rate of the truck depending on the terrain, the speed, and the positioning. You also get a high-approach angle steel front bumper, a flow-tie emblem for improved airflow, a repositioned dual exhaust, and 18-inch wheels paired with 33-inch Mud/Terrain tires.

What Configuration of the Chevy Silverado 1500 Is the ZR2 Available For?

For those of you considering an off-road performance model like the ZR2, you do need to consider that it is limited to specific configurations of the Silverado 1500. While the Silverado 1500 is available in three different cab sizes and three different bed sizes, with two different drivetrain configurations (including rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive), the ZR2 is only available in a very specific configuration of the Silverado 1500. Hence, you can only get it when configured in Crew Cab format with the Short Bed. It’s also only available in four-wheel drive format. However, the ZR2 can be customized with eight colors and two different base wheel designs.

The ZR2 is available with other packages and options. In fact, you can get various accessories such as running boards, badging accessories, tonneau covers, cargo management, decals, exhaust upgrades, and the Multi-Flex Tailgate for the ZR2. The off-road trim can also be upgraded with a number of trailering and utility features for those who want to haul and tow with the vehicle. In fact, you can tow up to 8,900 lbs with the right equipment and haul up to 1,440 lbs in the rear bed box.

The ZR2 is also available with some notable packages, including the Technology Package, which features a rear HD camera mirror, power tilt and telescoping steering, a head-up display, and a bed view camera. The other notable package is the ZR2 Bison Edition, featuring American Expedition Vehicles content.
