Fuel efficiency isn’t always a top priority when purchasing a pickup truck. Often, the towing capacity and payload capabilities trump all other features, including interior design and technology, as well as fuel efficiency. Today’s trucks offer more luxury, comfort, convenience, and better fuel economy options. Here are the Chevy pickup trucks with great gas mileage for 2022-2023.
2022 Chevrolet Colorado

2022 Chevrolet Colorado
The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize truck available as an extended cab with a 6.2-foot bed or a crew cab with a 5-foot or 6.2-foot bed. You can get the Colorado in four trims: WT (Work Truck), LT, Z71, and ZR2. The Colorado offers three engine options for the 2022 model year, each with a different EPA estimate for fuel efficiency. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, with an available four-wheel drive (4WD) for better traction and control over more challenging conditions and surfaces.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission found in all extended cab options for the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. This engine earns a respectable EPA-estimated rating of 25 mpg for highway driving and 19 mpg on city streets.
All crew cab versions of the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado feature a 3.6-liter V-6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, an option for the extended cab versions. The RWD engine gets an EPA-estimated rating of 25 mpg for highway driving and 18 mpg for city driving, while the 4WD is slightly lower at 24 mpg for highway driving and 17 mpg for city driving.
The LT trim and above also offer a diesel engine option in the crew cab versions. You can opt for a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is the most fuel-efficient engine available on the 2022 Chevy Colorado, with an EPA-estimated rating of 30 mpg for highway driving and 20 mpg on city streets for the RWD, and 28 mpg on the highway and 19 on city streets for the 4WD.
It’s important to note that the off-road-ready ZR2 trim gets slightly lower ratings for the V-6 and diesel option. With the V-6, the ZR2 earns 18 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg for city driving, while the diesel gets you 22 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg for city driving. You can haul up to 7,700 pounds with the Duramax diesel option, over double the 3,500 pounds possible with the four-cylinder engine.
2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
You can get Chevy’s full-size 2022 Silverado 1500 in nine trim levels: WT (Work Truck), Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ, and High Country. It’s available as a two-door regular cab, four-door extended cab (Double Cab), and four-door crew cab with full-size rear doors. Three bed sizes are available depending on cab selection. These include a 5-foot-8-inch bed, a 6-foot-6-inch bed, and an 8-foot bed. The Silverado 1500 has four engine options available for 2022. Much like the Colorado, rear-wheel drive is standard, with an available four-wheel drive option.
The base engine for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine delivers 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. For the RWD version, you can expect an EPA-estimated rating of 22 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg on city streets. The 4WD will get you 20 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city.
Next is a 5.3-liter V-8 mated to either an eight- or 10-speed automatic transmission that garners 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates are slightly different for the transmissions, with the 10-speed getting 21 mpg highway and 16 mpg city for the RWD and 19 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg on city streets in the 4WD. The eight-speed earns 19 mpg highway driving and 16 mpg for city driving on the RWD, with 18 mpg highway and 14 mpg city for the 4WD.
You can also opt for a 6.2-liter V-8 matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission and only available as 4WD. You get 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque with this V-8. The EPA-estimated rating of 19 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg for city streets is comparable to other engines for the Silverado 1500.
The most fuel-efficient engine for the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a diesel option. A 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline six-cylinder engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission to deliver 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. More notably, it also has 31 mpg for highway driving and 23 mpg in the city for the RWD version, and 26 mpg on the highway or 22 mpg in the city for the 4WD. The diesel engine also upgrades the towing capacity of the Silverado to 13,300 pounds. That’s 4,000 more than the 9,300-pound capability of the four-cylinder.
2023 Fuel-Efficient Chevy Truck Options
The 2023 Chevy Colorado is replacing the engine options with a single turbocharged 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder that delivers 237 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque for the WT and LT models. The EPA estimates aren’t available for this engine, but Chevy predicts it to be very similar to the outgoing four-cylinder option currently available in the Colorado. The tow rating will also stay the same at 3,000 pounds.
The Z71 features a turbo 2.7-liter four-cylinder that produces 310 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. You can expect a tow rating of 7,700 pounds, slightly less than the 7,000 currently available with the V-6 diesel. On the ZR2, you’ll get a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with the same horsepower but 430 lb-ft of torque.
For the 2023 Silverado 1500, Chevy is upgrading the diesel option to produce 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, slightly higher than the 2022 version. Chevy will also introduce the ZR2 Bison trim, with a 6.2-liter V-8 offering 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
