2024 Silverado EV Interior Features
As electric vehicles have become more and more popular, Chevrolet has taken notice. Although there are several electric sedans on the market, there are fewer electric trucks to choose from. Chevy’s 2024 Silverado EV will give drivers an excellent choice if they want an innovative electric truck. This Silverado comes with all the features that you expect from the iconic model, and it reinvents what it means to be a Chevrolet truck. If you’re in the market for a full-size truck but want to save money at the pump, the 2024 Chevrolet EV will be a great option for you.
To help you learn more about what kind of interior, safety, and tech features you can expect from the 2024 Silverado EV, our staff put together this overview.
Spacious Interior Cabin

2024 Silverado EV
Coming exclusively with a crew cab design, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV will have a large cabin that can be adjusted for more storage or seating capacity depending on your needs. Because the electric motor fits snugly into the bottom of the vehicle, Chevy could design an interior that focuses on flexibility. The RST and WT trim levels of this truck offer customizations that include front row and center console modular storage options that give you plenty of room to store your tools.
The crew cab design features two adjustable front seats, with a full back row of seating available for passengers. If you select the RST trim level, you can also enjoy the standard fixed-glass panoramic roof that gives the cabin a more open feeling and increased visibility. The RST also comes with heated seats in the front and back of the cabin, so you and your passengers can remain comfortable no matter the weather. Although Chevy hasn’t released every specification for this truck’s cabin, it has confirmed that passengers taller than 6 feet will fit comfortably inside.
Modern Tech Features
In addition to the innovative electric engine, the 2024 Silverado EV comes packed with all the tech features you can expect from a modern vehicle. The massive 17-inch display runs on the Linux operating system and automatically updates each Silverado EV with the latest software. This onboard computer gives drivers the ability to monitor all of their truck’s important systems with useful data and functionality metrics. The display comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so all of your important devices can seamlessly connect with the car.
This computerized system gives you control over your favorite multimedia devices, and it comes with features like keyless entry and ignition through a smart device. With this system, the vehicle will automatically unlock and start the engine when it detects a paired device. In the driver’s seat, you can experience the 11-inch digital instrument cluster that has replaced the traditional analog system. This digital display gives you real-time updates on your speed, performance, and surroundings.
The 2024 Silverado EV also comes with a 14-inch head-up display that lets you stay informed without taking your eyes off the road. The cabin also features wireless charging and all the smartphone connectivity features you need. With Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving, the Silverado EV lets you relax and enjoy your drive with a hands-free experience. You can trust this system to pilot your vehicle through the 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada. Super Cruise also automatically adapts the car’s performance to handle trailering or towing jobs.
Plenty of Cargo Space
With the engine packed tightly into the bottom of the chassis, this Silverado has more cargo space than ever before. In place of an engine, you can find an expansive trunk in the front of the vehicle. This is the first time Chevy trucks have had a trunk, and it’s definitely something to get excited about. Besides the new trunk, you can configure the 2024 Silverado EV in three ways to maximize storage capacity. If you’ve got passengers in the back, the standard cargo bed can fit items up to 5 feet, 11 inches long.
If you need even more room, you can use the 60/40 flip configuration that folds down one of the rear passenger seats to accommodate items up to 9 feet long. For as much room as possible, you have the option of folding down the entire rear passenger row to allow items up to 10 feet long to fit into the cargo bed. For smaller items, you can rely on the front trunk or the plentiful storage areas within the cabin. With all these configurations, it’s never been easier to haul your important items.
Safety You Can Trust
Even with all the innovative technology features and spacious cargo room of the 2024 Silverado EV, it doesn’t sacrifice any of the important safety features you need to stay secure on the road. The adaptive cruise control can automatically monitor your speed and adjust the vehicle’s velocity to match road conditions. The truck also comes with automatic emergency braking and forward-collision alerts that stop crashes before they happen.
When driving in dark conditions, you can trust the IntelliBeam high beam assist to adjust the brightness of your lights to maximize visibility without blinding your fellow drivers. This system combines the following distance indicator and lane departure warnings to keep you as safe as possible on the road while also ensuring you don’t endanger any other drivers. If you’re in the market for a vehicle that maximizes the security of you and your family, the 2024 Silverado EV is an excellent choice.
This was just a brief overview of the interior and safety features you can expect from the Silverado EV. 2022 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss
Like the 2022 Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss, the 2022 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss has the Z71 Off-Road package for increased performance. Still tall and proud is the 2022 Silverado 1500 ZR2 thanks to its optional 33-inch tires that are perfect for tackling muddy terrain. This truck also comes with large aluminum skid plates that sit under the truck’s body and multimatic DSSV dampers that optimize the truck’s contact with the road. If you’re looking for a vehicle with hard-to-beat aesthetics, this truck fits the bill. It has stylish black bezels, a raised hood with a styled insert, and a black grille with accent lighting.

2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Interior
How this truck’s interior looks depends significantly on the cab choice you make. You can either go with the regular, double, or crew cab. The Regular cab is ideal if you prioritize functionality for the job site. It seats up to three people in a single row.
If you need to transport family or friends in your cab, the double cab boosts your seating to six. The crew cab also seats six but offers you a lot more space in the second row. For example, the double cab has 35.2 inches of legroom in the second row, while the crew cab has 43.4 inches.
If you opt for one of the higher trims, the cab gets a luxury feel. You can include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel.
You have two choices for cargo space: a long bed measuring 8 feet 2 inches in length or a standard bed measuring 6 feet 10 inches.
When it comes to infotainment, the Silverado 2500 HD boasts smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The Work Truck and Custom trims get a 7-inch entertainment screen, while the higher trims benefit from a larger 8-inch screen. Most 2500 HDs feature a six-speaker stereo. You can upgrade to a wireless hotspot so you can stay connected wherever your journey takes you, satellite radio, and wireless device charging.
The 15-inch digital instrument display could also prove useful. It projects information like your speed, safety alerts, and engine performance onto your windshield so you can keep track of your Silverado’s vital signs while you’re on the road.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Exterior Paint Colors
Chevy has added a new exterior paint color option for 2022: Greenstone Metallic. In addition, you can choose from the same options from previous years, including black, Northsky Blue Metallic, Oxford Brown Metallic, and Red Hot. The remaining color choices are Silver Ice Metallic, Summit White, Tangier Orange, and Wheatland Yellow.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD MPG
The EPA doesn’t test vehicles as large as the Silverado 2500 HD, so no official fuel economy numbers are available. However, the auto website Car & Driver performed its own tests on the 2500 HD’s gas and diesel engines. The 6.6-liter gas engine returned 14 mpg on the highway, while the diesel unit achieved 19 mpg.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Performance
The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD has a standard 6.5-liter V-8 gas engine with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The gas engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and is available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
The optional upgrade under the hood is a 6.6-liter V-8 diesel engine. It makes 445 horsepower and a remarkable 910 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission completes the diesel power train. The diesel is offered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive as the gas engine. The diesel engine is likely your best choice if you regularly haul heavy loads.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Towing Capacity
The towing capacity of the 2022 Silverado 2500 HD is 18,500 pounds. You get this with the optional diesel engine. This Chevy manages to pull a still-impressive 17,370 pounds with the gas unit under the hood.
If you plan on hauling heavy loads in your cargo box rather than towing, the gas engine provides you with more hauling capability. With the gas engine and long cargo bed, the 2500 HD can haul loads of up to 3,979 pounds. The diesel’s upper hauling limit isn’t far behind at 3,715 pounds.
Chevy equips its heavy-duty truck with a great range of tech features to help make towing and hauling much easier. New for 2022 is a versatile six-function multi-flex tailgate designed to make loading and unloading your cargo box that bit easier. You can also benefit from cameras and other trailer safety features designed to keep you and other motorists safe on the road. The 15 available camera views will also come in handy when you’re backing up to a trailer, hitching up, or reversing your trailer into position to unload your cargo.
The Advanced Trailering System lets you create profiles for each type of trailer you tow. You can select the appropriate profile through your truck’s infotainment system.

Chevrolet Silverado EV Charge Time and Features
As electric vehicles, otherwise known as EVs, continue to gain market share, it isn’t any surprise that Chevrolet plans to build an EV truck. Chevrolet recently announced the impending arrival of their new Silverado EV, an electric pickup with the legendary capability of Silverado and the power of electricity.
At Dan Cummins Chevrolet Buick of Paris, we know new technology needs some explanation. So, to help those seeking to learn, we analyzed the Silverado EV and reported our results here. We’ll look at the electric powertrain, charging capabilities, driving range, and other popular features on the Silverado EV and see how they measure up against the competition.
Chevrolet Silverado EV Trim Levels and Release Date

Chevrolet plans to manufacture only the work truck or WT in the initial production set to begin in the first quarter of 2023. The WT offers basic truck features wanted by fleet owners and drivers. You can reserve your Silverado EV WT now at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price or MSRP starting at $39,900 before destination charges and options.
In the Fall of 2023, Chevy will start producing the top-tier RST trim. We expect the RST to come with Chevrolet’s best comfort and convenience features, as well as some tweaks to the powertrain. In addition, the infotainment system and driver-assist technology will be top-notch in the segment. You can reserve your Silverado EV RST now at an MSRP we believe will land around $105,000 before fees and options.
Stylistically, the Silverado EV will look very similar to the non-electric version. In addition, the architecture allows Chevy to install an independent front and rear suspension system in the Silverado EV. The WT model will come with 18-inch wheels standard, while the RST will have much larger 24-inch alloy wheels.
Electric Powertrain, Driving Range and Charging Capability
Chevrolet won’t use the non-electric Silverado platform to manufacture the Silverado EV. Instead, they plan on using the GMC Hummer EV underpinnings. While the Hummer EV has up to three electric motors, Chevy only intends to use two motors in the Silverado EV, one for each axle.
With this Hummer EV platform and two-motor configuration, Chevrolet plans to use a 200-kWh battery pack, likely in a pack of four 50-kWh batteries. As a result, Chevy estimates the Silverado EV will have a driving range of up to 400 miles on a full charge. In addition, this electric powertrain can use 800-volt and 350 kW charging. These high-capacity figures enable you to add 100 miles of driving range in only 10 minutes.
Chevrolet estimates the Silverado EV WT puts out 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. On the RST trim, Chevy tells us you’ll have a “Wide Open Watts” (WOW) drive mode. With WOW mode engaged, the Silverado EV RST produces an outstanding 664 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet hasn’t divulged the power numbers of the RST in regular drive mode, but we expect them to be at or above the WT power numbers.
All that power results in a zero to 60 mph time of under 4.5 seconds. In addition, the WT can tow up to 8,000 pounds and haul up to 1,200 pounds in the bed. The RST model has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a payload rating of 1,300 pounds. Chevy has already stated that future iterations will have tow ratings up to 20,000 pounds.
Additional Features of the Silverado EV
One exciting benefit of using the GMC Hummer EV platform enables Chevy to incorporate the Hummer EVs four-wheel steering into the Silverado EV design. With four-wheel steering, you get superior control. This steering system helps you navigate off-road obstacles better than standard two-wheel steering systems at low speeds. It also improves control when towing at higher speeds. The RST trim also comes with adjustable air springs, enabling you to lift the Silverado EV an additional two inches.
Chevy incorporated a new Multiflex Midgate in the Silverado EV. The 60/40 split-folding Multiflex Midgate extends the bed length forward into the cab’s rear seating area. Fold either side down, and you still have room for a rear passenger. If you fold both sides down, you lose the back seat passenger space but can fit wider items. In addition, the rear window comes out and stores within the seat fold, providing room for taller items.
The Silverado EV comes with Chevrolet’s Multiflex Tailgate. This tailgate design offers various configurations to create a workspace, extend your bed length back over the rear bumper, and act as a step for easy access to the bed. Your Silverado EV has a standard bed length of 5-feet, 9 inches. However, after deploying the Multiflex Tailgate’s bed extension and folding down the Multiflex Midgate, your bed length almost doubles to 10-feet, 10 inches.
Chevrolet Silverado EV Charge Time vs. the Competition
You currently have two existing EV trucks on the road today, the Ford Lightning and the Rivian R1T. In addition, Tesla has announced their plans to produce an EV pickup, but with no production date in sight, we left them off our comparison list. Let’s see how the two compare to the Silverado EV.
The Ford Lightning comes in at a slightly lower 563 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. Ford estimates the Lightning pickup can travel up to 250 miles on a full charge. You have an Extended Range option that boosts your distance to 300 miles. Either way, the Lightning comes in far below the Silverado EV range of 400 miles.
In addition, the LIghting can recharge up to 80% capacity in 41 minutes. Compare that with the Silverado EV that adds 100 miles in 10 minutes, and the Silverado EV gets to 80% in just over 30 minutes.
The Rivian R1T produced by the small, Florida-based manufacturer performs admirably in the horsepower and torque departments. However, the Rivian’s driving range is between 230 and 400 miles, based on optional battery and motor selections. The Rivian adds 140 miles in 20 minutes using a DC fast charging outlet. Even using Rivian’s highest driving range rating of 400 miles, it only achieves an 80% charge in 40 minutes, well over the Silverado EVs time.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Towing Capacity
When you think of electric vehicles (EVs), you might not think of power. But with the upcoming 2024 Silverado EV, Chevrolet combines the fuel efficiency and environmentally conscious aspects of going electric with the towing performance of a Silverado pickup. For your toughest work, you want to choose a vehicle that won’t let you down when you need it most. If you’re considering transitioning to an electric vehicle but you’re worried about sacrificing the performance you require, read more about the towing capacity of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Towing Capacity in Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles are often very heavy. With the enhanced battery packs needed to carry a pickup truck up to 400 miles on a charge, these vehicles can rack up much heavier weights than non-electric options. The weight only increases with passengers and cargo. To manage this, electric vehicle manufacturers often need to determine how they can enhance vehicle suspension to safely transport the Silverado EV’s weight. The good news, though, is that heavier vehicles tend to offer higher towing capacities. The new electric pickup maybe even stronger and more capable than some of the gas-powered engines you’re used to.
2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Standard Towing Capacity
First edition models of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado EV are expected to have a standard towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, while a commercial work truck version of the vehicle is rated to tow 8,000 pounds. That’s more than other electric trucks like the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, which is rated to tow 7,700 pounds with a standard-range battery and 10,000 pounds in the extended trim.
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV’s towing capacity also represents comparable towing to the regular cab version of a non-electric Silverado 1500 pickup, which provides a maximum of 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. While this number can increase to a maximum of 13,300 pounds towing with a double cab, it’s clear that the electric version of this popular truck holds its own against its non-electric counterpart. You can visit our website to learn more about all the available Silverado options at your local Kentucky Chevrolet dealer.
Payload Capacity
Although the heavier weight of the Chevrolet Silverado EV can increase towing capacity, it can also limit the vehicle in terms of payload capacity. Since this metric determines how much cargo a truck can carry in its bed, a larger weighted truck may be limited to how much additional weight it can safely add to the structure. Currently, the Silverado EV is rated to carry 1,300 pounds of payload. The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 comes with a standard payload capacity of 2,280 pounds. If you expect to hold heavy loads in your truck bed, this may be a consideration.
While Chevrolet hasn’t yet released the weight of the Silverado EV, similar electric models have weighed around 9,000 pounds. Some features, like a simpler roof and a two-engine structure, rather than a three-engine structure, should limit weight, but it can depend on the trim and any enhancements added. For example, a Silverado EV work truck might be 1,000 pounds lighter without options like a multi-flex tailgate or glass roof. As Chevrolet approaches production on its Silverado EV, it will likely announce trims with smaller batteries and fewer features that are much lighter, resulting in a larger payload rating.
Will the Silverado EV’s Towing Capacity Increase in the Future?
The 10,000-pound towing capacity of the standard Silverado EV might not be the only offering in the future. Chevrolet currently has plans to offer an enhanced EV trim that can tow up to 20,000 pounds. This massive feat of towing would put Chevrolet at the top of the electric vehicle towing capability list by a wide margin. It would also offer more towing capability than most non-electric trucks, including the standard Silverado trims. However, the expanded towing version of the model likely won’t be available for at least a few years.
Chevrolet hasn’t yet released much information on how they plan to create a truck with that much towing power, but it could stand to reason that a truck with this large of a towing capacity may have an even higher curb weight than the already heavy Silverado EV standard version. Features like eight-lug wheels may help increase towing ability, but it’s unclear how well a truck of this size could handle the 400 miles per charge promised with the Silverado EV.
It may be that the average consumer isn’t intended to purchase the Silverado EV with 20,000 pounds towing, and it may instead be offered as a fleet model for work purposes. But even 10,000 pounds of towing is likely to help you accomplish your toughest projects. If you need massive amounts of towing but would like to reap the benefits of an electric vehicle, Chevrolet’s upcoming EVs may offer you a solution.
Features To Support Towing
Increased weight can add more power to your vehicle to handle all your towing needs, but other features within the Silverado EV trims can also let you confidently pull your important cargo. Four-wheel steering should ease trailer maneuverability, letting you move more with ease. Additionally, the Silverado EV’s standard Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system should support trailer towing, providing drivers with an enhanced, worry-free experience as they tow even the largest loads.
As more vehicle brands transition into the EV field, you can count on your local Paris, Kentucky Chevrolet dealer to help you make the best, most informed auto decisions. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV trims should provide you with a luxurious electric vehicle experience that also doesn’t limit any of the power you might need.

If you’re looking for the best used truck dealer in Lexington, Dan Cummins Chevrolet Buick is the right choice. Just because Chevy is in our name doesn’t mean we only have used Chevy trucks on our lot. So when you want something like a Ford F-150 or find yourself debating between the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500, we’ve got you covered.
Both trucks are great options and are designed to share similar purposes, but each one offers specific perks that benefit different crowds. The Silverado is best at towing and hauling, while the Ram is a great performance option; however, both models are strong and quick overall. Since this can get a bit confusing, we are here to help you see which one is the better fit for you. It’s important to keep in mind here that neither of these trucks is better than the other. Rather, they offer important specs that make them appeal to different crowds. Both trucks are ready to tow large loads and are powerful, so no matter which one you bring home, you can be confident in your decision.
The Silverado 1500
The Chevy Silverado first originated in 1999, replacing Chevy’s classic C/K line. These trucks were designed for both off-roading and towing labor, coming with V6 and V8 engine options. These models could tow up to 10,300 pounds and could haul 3,129 pounds worth of cargo in their bed. These Silverados could essentially handle any ordinary towing job you’d ever need.
They still deliver these results and even more impressive stats today. Another perk to buying a Silverado is that these trucks are known for their longevity. For example, one 2006 Silverado model reportedly made it over 1.2 million miles, and it was still going strong at the time of reporting. But that doesn’t mean we’re encouraging you to go out and purchase a 2006 model. Despite the Silverado’s resiliency, we recommend going with a third-generation (2014 – 2018) Chevy Silverado. These options are newer, so they include higher towing capacities, more safety technology, and better warranties, thanks to their Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) status.
For example, let’s take a look at the 2017 Chevy Silverado model. These trucks can tow up to 12,500 pounds when properly equipped. The double-cab body style can handle the most payload, landing at 2,250 pounds. This means that they can haul as much as 2,250 in the bed alone with no extra packages or add-ons.
There are also several different engine options on this model, including a 4.3-liter V6 engine, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. But no matter which combination you choose, you can still tow a low maximum of 9,500 pounds and a 1,930 payload capacity. There’s no way to go wrong with a 2017 Silverado when it comes to labor stats. It’s safe to say that the third-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 is made for towing and hauling above all else. In fact, the 2017 Silverado 1500 is the most tow-capable of its class, making it the number one option for farmers, construction workers, and the likes.
That said, the Silverado’s safety features are there to really help it shine. Its most unique safety asset is the Teen Driver Mode feature. Teen Driver Mode is a new driver monitoring system that comes with a vehicle tracker, a volume limiter, and a speed limiter. It also includes a report card that tracks how your teen is driving when you’re not around. While many people like to teach their teens to drive cars or crossovers, the added safety that comes with a truck’s body style is a large perk of choosing this model. Teen Driver Mode is a great system for safely teaching your teen good driving habits. This mode comes standard no matter what trim you choose.
When you upgrade your trim, you’ll also get all sorts of driver assist features such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Forward Collision Alert. These work to help prevent head-on collisions and sideswipes by providing drivers with audible alerts and automatic brake applications when needed.
Most importantly, no matter what trim you choose, you’ll get Trailer Sway Control as a standard feature on the 2017 Silverado. This works with Chevy’s StabiliTrak to prevent fishtailing and traction loss. Overall, the third-generation Silverado has high safety ratings thanks to its build and these driver assist options. For a truck with great towing capability and modern safety features, check out a third-generation Silverado 1500.

The Ram 1500
The Ram’s history is a bit more complex. Technically, the first Ram was released in 1994. At the time, Dodge owned Ram, but from 2009 on, the Ram brand separated from Dodge and became its own. Since then, the brand has greatly improved since it’s truck-centered, giving Ram more room for upgrades and more trim variants.
The main reason to choose a Ram is for its performance levels. It’s overall the best street performance option for trucks. We recommend the later-level fourth-generation Ram 1500 (2009 – 2018) or a newer fifth-generation (2019 – Present) when buying a used Ram truck. Here’s why.
We’ll start with the 2018 Ram 1500 first. This model can tow up to 10,620 pounds, so it’s definitely a tow-capable model. However, it’s the better option for those who are performance-focused. When you opt for the Ram’s strongest HEMI V8 engine option, you’ll get up to 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. In addition to its power and efficiency, the 2018 Ram is also tech-savvy and includes features such as remote vehicle start, dual-zone temperature control, which means that both the driver and the passenger can control their thermostat, and rain-sensing wipers.
The 2018 model even includes its own “Harvest Edition” trim, which focuses heavily on agriculture and farming crowds. You can actually find 2018 Harvest Edition Rams to match your tractor color. Whether you prefer New Holland or Case IH tractors, there’s a Ram out there for you. Thanks to this and its high tow capacity, the Ram makes for just as great of a farm truck as the Silverado does.
While the regular Ram definitely hits high on the horsepower and torque ratings, the 2021 Ram TRX takes the Ram’s performance talents a bit further, producing as much horsepower as a sports car. That’s right; this model packs 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. The only truck that even slightly competes with the 2021 TRX is the Ford F-150 Raptor, which doesn’t even come close to matching up in horsepower or torque categories, landing at 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.
Most vehicle enthusiasts feel the need to have a powerful truck and a speedy sports car, but the TRX removes that need by combining all these specs into one singular model. Whether you like the classic Ram or the TRX, those who care about towing power AND race performance power will definitely want to ask their local dealership about a fourth or fifth-generation Ram 1500.

Which One Do I Choose?
While many trucks outperform each other in some retrospect, there’s no competition between the Silverado 1500 and the Ram 1500. Rather, it’s about which aspects appeal most to you. The Silverado is definitely capable of both towing and meeting above standard truck performance expectations. However, the Ram 1500 is a great option for those who need to tow and haul occasionally but who also enjoy racing and showing off on the streets. Here at Dan Cummins Chevrolet Buick, we have several available models no matter which route you go. Check out our dealership today and ask to test drive one or both of these powerful truck models.

By now, most enthusiasts are aware of the Silverado’s future as an all-electric light-duty pickup. It was an inevitability as emission laws and efficiency standards are consistently moving toward greener technologies. This means the traditional combustion engine will soon become a rarity for new model years within the very near future. But while the gas-powered alternatives are still available, do you opt for a combustion-based gas guzzler, or do you go with the new powertrain on the block in the form of an electric truck? It’s something many truck shoppers will mull over as they head to a Chevy dealer in KY to find their next ride, especially if it happens to be a 2022 Silverado 1500.
Choosing one kind of powertrain over another is now a little more involved than in previous model years. Traditionally, your choices for the Silverado spanned a multitude of gasoline engine options that ranged from a 2.7 liter 4-cylinder all the way up to a 6.2-liter V8. The biggest challenge was figuring out what your price ceiling was going to be and how much horsepower and torque you wanted out of the truck. But now you have to consider something that doesn’t even run on traditional fossil fuels. It can definitely look like a big decision for people considering a 2022 Chevy Silverado. But before we get into that, there’s another question that has to be addressed first and foremost…
View New Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Is There Still a Gas-Powered 2022 Silverado?
Yes. The 2022 Chevy Silverado Limited will be a carryover release containing many of the features, trims, and powertrains from the previous model year Silverado. The fully refreshed 2022 Silverado will also offer an array of gasoline engines, though the full list has not yet been revealed. This means that you can still purchase a 2022 Silverado with a tried and true powertrain that you have come to know and trust from the light-duty pickup. The Silverado EV is a separate entity that is primed to face off against other electric pickups from competing manufacturers.
The Silverado Limited will continue to offer the EcoTec3 and Duramax powertrains. This means you still have access to the 2.7-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter Ecotec V8, and the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel (the 4.3-liter V6 found in the 2021 Silverado has been dropped from the lineup). Anyone not ready to move into the green zone can still embrace the traditional engine options that the Silverado has been known for in recent years. Some minor trim changes have also been made in terms of the availability of some of the powertrains. The Work Truck trim will have access to the 5.3-liter V8, and the Duramax turbo-diesel will be made available on the LT Trail Boss trim.

What’s the Difference Between Electric Motors and Combustion Engines?
Technically, electric motors are just the mechanisms used to propel the vehicle forward (or backward). The real power behind electric vehicles is in the battery pack. This is where the fundamental differences come in between an electric vehicle and a vehicle using a combustion engine. The electric Silverado will be powered by a battery and electric motors.
In a traditional combustion engine, you press the accelerator, and it feeds fuel into the engine to create propulsion when the vehicle is in gear. For an electric vehicle, you press the accelerator, and it feeds power from the battery pack into a permanent magnet motor that uses electro-magnetism to rapidly spin and propel the vehicle.
These fundamental differences change how torque is generated for the vehicle. Combustion engines need to get up to speed to generate more torque. Electric motors, however, have their full power available from the moment electricity is applied and actually taper off slightly at higher rotational speeds. The power is instantaneously generated and then delivered to the driveline.
Is a Combustion Engine or Electric Motor Better for Me?
Since we’re talking about a 2022 Chevy Silverado, comparing an electric motor versus a combustion engine is very different than when talking about a sedan or subcompact crossover. A light-duty pickup serves different purposes compared to smaller vehicles, so there are some pros and cons when it comes to deciding on which powertrain option is a better fit for you.
For pickup trucks, a lot of the focus is on payload and trailering capacity; most truck owners want something they can rely on for some large-scale tasks. Combustion engines of the gas and diesel variety have been go-to solutions for heavy-duty towing and trailering, and with good reason. When the chips are down, and you need an engine that can handle a heavy load, the EcoTec and Duramax engines have held up under some strenuous undertakings. If you’re worried about reliability, then you can at least trust going the old-school route of a gas-guzzling engine to get the job done.
However, electric motors can’t be discounted either. They still allow you to tow and trailer, albeit maybe not to the same degree as a turbo-diesel or high-end V8. Even still, the electric motors being put into the new generation of trucks are capable of high-end torque output at low speeds and are finely tuned to accommodate some of the payload and trailering ratings most truck-shoppers have come to expect from light-duty pickups. A lot of it boils down to what you plan to use the truck for and how much power you need from the truck for designated tasks.

How Much Difference Is There in Fuel Economy?
Fuel economy for trucks depends almost entirely on what you’re using the truck for. If you want a powerful Chevy Silverado with great top-end speed and acceleration, you’re going to end up sacrificing some fuel economy, especially in the city. However, if you go with the turbo-diesel, then you’re going to get great gains on both gas mileage and performance. Ironically, with an electric truck, you actually get better fuel economy (or electric economy) in the city than you do on the highway, thanks to regenerative braking, which helps restore some of the battery’s charge the more you engage in stop-and-go travel.
For the 2022 Silverado EV, an estimated 400-mile range on a full charge means you can travel quite a ways before you have to recharge. Further, you won’t have to put up with the fluctuating dollars-per-gallon at the pump due to fluctuating oil prices on the market. Instead, you have the luxury of being able to charge the Silverado up a number of different ways based on charging stations and charging station access.
One of the benefits of an electric vehicle over a traditional combustion engine is that you can actually refuel at home by plugging your Silverado right into a charging socket. That’s not something you can do with a gas or diesel truck and makes an EV a great choice if you mostly operate from home. However, if you are looking for long-distance towing, then a gasoline or diesel Silverado lets you quickly refuel wherever you are, even if it is less convenient in your daily life.
Are There Other Benefits of an Electric Silverado?
There are some unique benefits to an electric 2022 Silverado over its traditional gas and diesel counterparts. On top of the instant electrical power and convenient at-home charging, Chevy has done its best to give the new Silverado some additional features to set it apart from the crowd. One of the most exciting is its new four-wheel steer capability. When you are trying to make a sharp turn, the rear wheels will also rotate, giving you a much shorter turning radius. Little details like this are also something to consider when you visit a Chevy dealer in KY if you’re planning on grabbing a 2022 Silverado.
